connect to your internet service provider on the world wide
web to send and receive emails (webmail), you are not using

The principal page of a website; the top level or contents
page. |

Hyperlink |
A
feature of a web page that allows you with a single click to
open another (linked) page in sequence, either in the same
or a new window. It may
also allow you to open a blank pre-addressed email for
sending a response to something on the page you are viewing. |

ISP |
Internet Service Provider - the organisation providing your
internet connection with whom you maintain an account, e.g.
AOL, BT, Freeserve, NTL, etc. |

Logon ID |
A
identifier (name, number or combination) that is used in
conjunction with a password to enable secure logging on to a
protected system, website, or part of a website. |

Moderator |
The person responsible for maintaining an online discussion
forum. |

Navigation Pane |
A
section of a page containing links to other pages on the
website that aids quick and easy navigation about the site. |

Registration |
A
process that provides a system administrator with a unique
means of identifying a remote user for subsequent logon to a
system or secure area. |

Remote Server |
You may sometimes see this in an error message. The
remote server is the computer at the other end of your
connection, serving you with information like this. |

Site Map |
A
diagram or representation of the structure of a given
website. |
|
Sub-domain |
A
sub-level to a domain on the internet. Several sub-domains
can exist in a hierarchy. For example if
www.hspcpensioners.org
is the domain, http://london.hsbcpensioners.org might
be a sub-domain. |

Thread |
A
discussion forum posting and a series of replies all about
the same subject. |
|
Thumbnail |
A
small image or photograph which holds a link to an enlarged
version of it. The small size allows faster loading of
the page on which it appears, and the choice for the user as
to whether they wish to see the larger picture. |

URL |
Uniform Resource Locator, or the address of a website on the
world wide web. Each page has its own URL. A URL
will start with http:// which most browsers
assume and insert, so you need type only the part of the
address starting www. |

Web Browser |
The program on your PC that allows you to view and navigate
websites, often Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape or
Mozilla.
Your browser will have two
buttons, often at the top left hand corner marked with left
and right hand arrows. These navigate BACK and FORWARD
across pages you have viewed. |

Webmail |
A
service provided by a number of organisations which allows
you to access email services by logging on to an internet
website, anywhere in the world. Examples are Yahoo or
Hotmail. |

Webmaster |
The person responsible for the maintenance of a website. |

Website |
The location of an individual's or organisation's presence
on the world wide web, consisting of one or more pages of
information and/or pictures. |

World Wide Web |
The internet, Information Superhighway etc., a network of
connected computers across the world providing access to (web)pages
of information. Often designated as part of an
internet address as www. |
